I’ll be pushing a baby through a manikin’s pelvis! And talking it through many times! Sound bizarre?
My fellow midwife, Bianca, and I, have been honoured to man (woman) an interactive birthing exhibit at the Saltwater, Freshwater Festival in Kempsey.
http://saltwaterfreshwaterfestival.com.au Have a look at the Program Guide – it is amazing. http://saltwaterfreshwaterfestival.com.au/2014-program/
The website says it best… ‘The Saltwater Freshwater Festival celebrates and shares our Aboriginal living culture on the Mid-North Coast with the wider community and commemorates Australia Day as a positive, inclusive, family day for all communities to enjoy.
It is so exciting that Kempsey is hosting the event this year and this sounds like a fabulous way to spend Australia Day to me.
Plus I get to listen to Troy Cassar-Daley, Pirra featuring Jess Beck, Supafresh, Amos Roberts and Sages Muse, hear inspiring Dreamtime Stories, see gorgeous art and artists at work, and watch the incredible dancers and a whole heap more. It’s going to be a great day.
Since our names came up, I’ve found myself becoming even more enthusiastic about seeing all of the above as well as have the opportunity to offer information, especially to younger festival goers, about pregnancy and how amazing women are when they give birth.
Plus it’s a great opportunity to show what we do as midwives, how to become a midwife, (and we so need more inspiring indigenous and non-indigenous midwives for Australia’s future babies) and what services are out there for young families in our community. And we’ll even hand out some easy to follow instructions on resuscitating a few doll babies just for the fun of it – because you never know when you might be able to save a life – or help someone else do it.
So we are hoping lots of people will come and share some of their day with us, try their hand, watch the antics of our state of the art simulation mum, play with our doll babies, chat about newborns and birthing and learning, and hopefully have lots of laughs as we all enjoy each other’s company. I can’t wait.
Where ever you are and whatever you do I wish you a happy Australia Day on the 26th January 2014!
